PROBATION GRANTED

Samuel. Torepe, ex-Town Clerk of Ohakune, aged 39, was admitted to probation for twelve months when he appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme.Court today for forgery, uttering, theft as a servant (two charges), and false pretences (two charges). Counsel (Mr. E. P. Hay) said that of the amount of about £50 involved, practically all represented expenditure which the,prisoner could fairly have charged to the Borough Council. There was no suspicion of interference with patriotic funds he had been handling or of irregularities in the borough accounts. His Honour said the offences were all of a very trivial description. The prisoner was ordered to make restitution of £52 ts lOd and pay the costs of the prosacution.
