SERVICE CLUBS KEPT BUSY

All the Service Clubs report record crowds at their Friday/Saturday, and Sunday entertainments, and the clubs that were open throughout the week were kept extremely busy catering Cor men on leave. Among the latter was the A.N.A., and the cafeteria welcomed the generous gifts of provisions sent in by Mr A. H. Smith, of Hastings, the Patea Women's Home Guard. the Hawe.ra W.W-9.A,, Qteki and Te Horp Women's Bm^ggpcy Committees. Hataitjjj W.WJ.A,, and an anonymous friend M Whenuafciira. Rotary Club, and- +Ettgjish-speaking Union. ■ I 450 AT SUNDAY TEA. Members of the Pioneer Club were the hostesses at the soldiers' tea at the V.M.C.A. yesterday, when 450 were ] served with a meal. Mr. Worthy Martin was chairman, and he was accompanied by Mrs. Martm and Mr, Eaton. Those who took part in the concert" programme were Mrs. woodward, Mr. Val Jones, Miss Joan Airey Mrs. Ann Lane. Master Dudley Bustin, and A/C Eric Brown;.R.N.Z.A-F. Mr. Allwright led the community sing, and Mr. Wood was pianist. Four hundred afternoon teas were'served on Saturday by No. 1 Section W.W.S.A., and in the evening entertainment was provided by Miss Hopi Love's Raratongan Concert Party. The V.M.C.A: was also I responsible for 250 beds being provided ' for men *;at their hostel, and at the | Taranaki Street Wesley Church and the Central Baptist Church. Y.F.H. ENTERTAINMENT. Gifts of vegetables received from the Oriental Bay Land Girls and Lower Hutt Land Girls helped provide appetising meals at the Y.F.H. Club. Members of the Lower Hutt Canteen Group assisted in the cafeteria. The Island Bay League -of Mothers provided | supper. Mr. Mori, of the V.M.C.A., Rongotai, conducted the Sunday evening service, and an evening programme was arranged by Taylor's Novelty Band. Mr. and Mrs. Robson and Messrs. Thompson and Martin, Mesdames Ohlsson, Sims, and Miss Ashcroft and girls of the Y.W.C.A. Brougham Street residence were among the helpers. Mrs. J. S. Martin was hostess. THE GBOSVENOR. At the Grosvenor Club on Saturday night. Sergeant Eric Gillard was M.C., and extras were played by Driver M. McLean. On Sunday night an exhibition hula was given by Tommy Rae. Dona tions of cakes, and sandwiches .were received from the lona Tearooms Helpers on duty were Mesdames Gar ratt, Clark, Gordon, Meyer, and Misses Retter, Twomey. and Badland. AT THE VICTORY. The Victory Club : received gifts ■from Mr. J, K. Gumvand Gunner J R. Bretts. Extras were played by ! A.C.I. Logan and Sergeant Robb, who was M.C., led a community sing. The | Rhythm Trio supplied the dance music The hostesses were assisted by Miss [Rosemary: Herald, and the weekend i helpers included1 Mrs. Slack-, Mrs. Jeffs : Misses <eah Day, Mavis and Jean Rae Jean Ford, Thelma: Angel, Joan Mair Lois Enting, and Messrs. Henderson and. Wade. CATHOLIC SERVICES. A Christmas cake, which is to be raffled, was presented to the Catholic Services Club, by Mrs. O'Leary. and the club also received a gift of jams and pickles from a group of ladies at Lower Hutt. Driver M. Cpsgrove assisted the committee by playing the music for the extra dances, and mem bers of the Ramahi groups were reiponsiblp for the catering. THE ''CINDERELLAS." Miss Dorothy Seymour entertained with recitations 'at the Cinderella Club on Friday night, and Miss M Davidson sang several songs. The clubrooms were gay with summer flowers throughout the weekend. Members on duty were Misses H. Stevenson. E. Roy, and L. Rigalsford.
