RUGBY, October 31

Mr. Churchill and Field-Marshal Smuts today addressed a national conference of representatives of the coalmining industry, held privately in London under the chairmanship of Major Lloyd George, Minister of Fuel and Power. At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of thanks to .MrChurchill and Field-Marshal Smuts, proposed by Sir Evan Williams, president of the Mining Association, and seconded by Mr. Will Lawther, president of the Mineworkers' Federation, was passed unanimously. Every pit in the land, says "The Timep," was represented at the conference, which was notable as. being an occasion on.which a matter of domestic policy called for conspicuous and forceful intervention by the Prime Minister.—B.O.W.
