LUFTWAFFE PERSISTS

POUNDING OF CITY

(Rec. 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 1

The German tank and infantry attacks against Stalingrad's factory district are weakening, but the Luftwaffe is keeping between 50 and 100 bombers pounding the defiant sectors. The Russians are taking advantage of the more favourable turn to improve their positions. M. Alexandrov declared that the Russians, on some days recently, killed between 4500 and 5000 Axis troops. The Germans have probably lost a quarter of a million men around Stalingrad in the last three months.

The situation at Nalchik is tense, says the "Red Star." The Germans-are speedily bringing up reinforcements. The Russians yesterday fell back in two sectors. One withdrawal followed a battle against superior forces consisting of 6000 infantrymen, supported by 40 tanks and also planes. The other withdrawal followed an encirclement, from which the Russians brobke out.

Savage battles continue further westward with the Russians pressing forward north-east of Tuapse, dtespite stiff resistance everywhere. The Russians are repelling all attacks east of Novorossisk.

A German communique claims a considerable advance west of Terek.
