CHURCHILL AUCTIONS

On the auction page in this issue are listed a number of the more prominent items which have been donated for sale in Wellington on behalf of the Churchill auctions. There is wide interest in this forthcoming sale of rare books, pictures, manuscripts, antiques, and art objects, and already bids have been received from as far afield as Australia for some of the more important items. Unquestionably it is the largest art sale ever held in New Zealand. Collectors in particular will be well catered for, although quite a number of the goods will have appeal to the general public as well. A fine catalogue has been published and is on sale at Whitcombe and Tombs. Ltd., C. A. Innes, Ltd., the Turnbull Library, the Public Library, or from the honorary organiser, Mr. P. A. Lawlor. The' one most important function of the sale will be the affixing of the Churchill seal to items sold. It is the intention of the Churchill Auction Committee that this seal will have the effect of increasing the value of the articles purchased to the extent, of the seal being equivalent to the famous London hall-mark "Bought at Christies." As every penny raised from the sale is to be given to the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Fund, it is anticipated that there will be a very large attendance and that bidding will be strong for all the items, which come under the hammer.
