HERE AND THERE

Residential Nursery. Mrs. D. Taylor, Clyde Street, Island Bay, held the last of her bridge afternoons in aid of the W.N.R. Residential Nursery recently. The parties were well attended and a most enjoyable time was spent on each occasion during the winter months. A very satisfactory amount has been raised for the Berhampore branch. The winners for the season were Mrs. J. McKenzie, Mrs. N. Flint, and Mrs. L. Lyons. Men Entertain Their Hostesses. The girls of the Miramar Fighting Services' Hospitality Club were recently entertained to a dance, given by the boys who have made the club their frequent rendezvous. Items were given by Miss L. Compton (vocal) and Misses V. and F. Compton (elocutionary), and meals and refreshments were provided by. the- Catholic Women's Guild of Miramar. Music for dancing was played by Mr. M. L. Jones and S/Sgt. George Spooner was M.C. Te Ropu Club. The October meeting of the Te Ropu Maori Club for soldiers' parcels proved as successful as previous meetings, and was greatly enjoyed. The president, Mrs. Hapi Love, welcomed the speaker, Mrs. W. Bailey, who gave an interesting talk about "Pacific Islands" and also sang "Mamaku" (lyric by Rosa Knight, music by Mona Shakespeare); the accompanist was Miss Hobbs. Miss Dix recited one of Kipling's poems. The secretary, Mrs. Waari, gave a brief summary of the club's activities for Maori and pakeha soldiers. Mesdames Mat Love, D. Fraser, and Bloomfield were stallholders. Mrs. D. CookeWilkie, of Penang, was a guest of honour. Webby's Club Presentation. The committee and members of Webby's Club had Miss Kathleen O'Connor as their guest on a recent evening, and the president, in introducing her, said how grateful they all were to her for enabling them to carry on the activities of the club by giving them the use of her studio. Miss V. Mac Donald, hon. treasurer, presented Miss O'Connor with a token of esteem from the members, and also a gift for Mr. Gault, who was not able to be present. Patriotic Townswomen. The September and October monthly meetings of the Brooklyn Townswomen's Guild were well attended. At the former Mrs. Albert presided, and there was a brisk sale of spring flowers, the proceeds making a pleasing contribution to the parcel fund for prisoners of war. There was also a collection in aid of a soldiers' tea to be given at the V.M.C.A. on Sunday, November 1. The October meeting was members' day. Mrs. Hill presided and officers and committee were entertained by a bright programme of songs and sketches given by members of the guild. ___ ra _^_^___^
