LARGE CABARET DANCE

Officers of the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Wellington Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society held a cabaret dance at the Majestic last night. Many of the voluntary aids wore their white uniforms with veils and scarletlined capes; others were in evening dress, and the majority of their partners were servicemen.

There were about 500 dancers, guests of honour including Mr. W. Enden and Mr. F. Claxton (representatives of the American Red Cross), Miss D. Cooper (Commandant Wellington City Subcentre), Miss E. Robertshaw (assistant), Miss T. Lissington (secretary), Mrs. O. V. Hole (Commandant Red Cross Transport Corps), Mr., Mrs., and Miss Annand-Smith, Mrs. Knox Gilmer. Mr. and Mrs. Sleightholme, Mrs. V. R. Gunn, Mrs. G. Bryenton, and Miss I. Kohn.

Voluntary aids sold flowers in the foyer, the sprays being of their own making. The Police Pipe Band played selections, and between dances floor shows were given by Miss Marie Cording, a pupil of Miss Diana PowerPalmer (tap dance), Miss Audrey Allardice, and Mr. F. Rogers, and Miss Lilian Hoskell and Mr. J. James (exhibition dances),.and a ballet of girls. The entertainment also included songs by Mr. Ken Macauley, accompanied by Mr. C. Howe, and elocutionary items by Mrs. Linda Hastings. The programme was arranged by Mrs. G. F. Young. The dance committee included Mrs. Murray (secretary). Miss Grace, Mrs. Fongere, Mrs. McGregor, Mrs. E. F. Youngs, and Miss Lissington.
