CULTURAL MOVE
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) RAROTONGA, October 19.
At a recent meeting in Rarotonga it was decided to form a society to be called the Cook Islands Society, - the objectives of which will be: .(1) To collect for a museum to be established in Rarotonga articles of interest in the history of the Cook Islands; (2) to preserve, the arts and crafts, of the Maori people; (3) to preserve sites of historical interest in the Cook Islands.
Officers were elected as follows:— Patron, Judge H. F. Ayson (Resident Commissioner of Rarotonga); president, Mr. H. J. Morgan (Registrar of Courts); vice-president. Makea nui Takau (Ariki); secretary, Mr. D. Chamber. A committee was also set up'consisting of the president, vice-president, secretary, Tinomana (Ariki), Dr. E. P. Ellison, Messrs. W. P. Brown and C. Cowan.
Outlining the proposal to form the society, Mr. Morgan said that because so many articles of historical interest had been sent overseas to museums' and private collections, the people of the Cook Islands had to go outside their own territory to learn something of the ancient, arts and crafts of the Maori people. It was felt, however, that there was' still scope for a museum in, the Cook Islands.
