BOYS ON FARMS
The scheme which has been prepared by the Education Department, the National Service Department, and the Department of Agriculture for employing schoolboys on farm work during the summer holidays is deserving of commendation and support. The need for assistance on farms during one of the busiest periods of the year is clear, and the response on the part of the boys and their parents should be enthusiastic, not only as a matter of duty but because of the obvious advantages from a health point of view of a spell in the country at a time when weather conditions may reasonably be expected to be favourable. The conditions of employment set out by the Minister of Education appear to be reasonable, both from the point of view of the farmers and the boys. In addition to performing a useful service to the nation and of securing a beneficial change of environment, the boys who undertake the work will have an opportunity of learning something of the .conditions under which' farmers work. In a country like New Zealand, Avhere primary and secondary industries are so ;■ interdependent, this will be all to the good.
