RED DASH SUCCEEDS

AUGMENT'S OVERDUE WIN (By "Binocular.") Despite transport difficulties, there was quite a good crowd at.Otaki on Saturday for the Foxton Racing Club's Spring Meeting. The weather was brilliantly fine, but the track was a shade holding, and form proved to be somewhat erratic. Betting was comparatively free, £19,471 10s being put through the totalisator, compared with £21,730 10s at Levin last year. The Carnarvon Handicap, the big distance event, saw the downfall of all the fancied candidates, Classform, the favourite, finishing sixth, with the second elect. Triple Crown, being one placing further back, and Duncannon last to finish. In a muddling pace early Don Quex and Sir Crusoe (who looked very big) were out in front from Sanction, Triple Crown, and Red Dash. Going along the back "stretch Red Dash and Sanction improved their positions, the former running up to take charge immediately on straightening up for home, where Sir Crusoe commenced to stop. Over the final furlong Red Dash held her place to win quite comfortably from her stablemate, Sanction, with Don Quex- half ,a length back. Dark Eagle was fourth, with Sir Crusoe next. Classform, well back early, made a brief showing in the final stages, but it was not her true form. WELL HANDLED. ! After-making a smart beginning in ; the Trial Stakes, Lady Spiral allowed Enlarge to take over the pacemaking, and the latter led into the straight from Lady Spiral, with Goldform, |Fing Scarf, and Great March next in the order. The leader commenced to weaken, and over the last 50 yards Lady Spiral and Ring Scarf ran past, the former being a long neck clear of Ring Scarf at the post, with Great i March also 'touching off Enlarge right 'on the post. Goldform was fourth, [with Arctic Night fifth after being well back early. Charming Song stood on the mark. The winner was judiciously ridden by W. J. Broughton. An inquiry was held after the-race as to whether Great March was run on his merits, but the explanation of the trainer and the rider were accepted. , WELL-BACKED FANCY. The Awapuni trainer C. J. Thomson saddled up two candidates for the Paiaka Hurdles. The novice hurdler, Circular Note, was preferred to Colossal Chief, and whereas the former won comfortably, the topweight was the last to finish, Inventor having bled and been pulled,'up. Henry of Huntingdon and Siglow made the play for a big portion of the journey, but Circular Note moved up to be m charge at the entrance, and, with the last fence down, the favourite won without being pressed. Vitement, after losing a lot of ground early, came on well for third, with Mataimat a useful fourth. IN HOLLOW FASHION. Favourite for the Motuiti Hack Handicap, Deolali won in hollow fashion, but there was a keen battle for second between Nighean and Te Ore, a head separating them. Leisurely was a fair fourth, with Makarora and Matalite next, the last-named having been last to move when the tapes were lifted. Deolali was at a "Gloaming" price, but. he was the best of good things. Molly Malone showed early but dropped out a furlong and a half from home. | FIRST EDITION WINS. | A newcomer to racing circles at this lend of the island, First Edition won | the Wharangi Hack Handicap narrowly from Lady Virginia, who had always been in the van. Theolateral, third practically all the way, did not come home.quite so well as expected, although he took third place ahead of

Sir Fox, who was at the rear going the back. CJunyah was prominent for five furlongs, but then retired. Straight Left, drawn wide out, did not begin too well, and, after being pinched back turning for home, met with a check within the next furlong. AUGMENT AT LAST. An overdue win came the way of Augment in the Robinson Handicap, but the Inflation gelding won really well. The runner-up, Moutoa Bond, did not enjoy a good run, being second last at the half-mile post, and she was then forced to come round her field on the turn. Vivid Night was well placed throughout, but he could not do better than third. Saxon Tor was in a nice position coming across the top, when he met with trouble andi .went back. Race Away was the pacemaker for about five furlongs, but stopped very quickly. RED CHIEF NICELY. Favourite for the Awahou Hack Handicap, Kinsman met with a check turning into the straight, and although he came home on the outer in good style he could not bridge the gap on Red Chief, who had run through on straightening up. Acrobat was forced to make his run on the outside, and did well to finish third. Sea Quex was well enough placed had she been good enough, but others were well i beaten, both Wildfire and Genghiz Khan dropping out at the top of the straight. STRONG FINISHING RUN. The field for the Moutoa Hack Handicap proved troublesome, and when they were finally dispatched the dozen runners were quickly strung out. Miss Portland raced to the front from Foreign Princess, with Tetratina, Cheetah, and Flying Spray following at short intervals. Pedantic moved forward^ on the turn, and, favoured by a clear run along the rail, he ran past Foreign Princess after the latter had taken command from Miss Portland. Tetratina failed by half a head to reach Miss Portland for third, and then came Arctic Night, who made up a lot of ground. DETAILED RESULTS.
