Russian Drive Near Stalingrad

LONDON, September 25. Heavy street fighting is still reported from Stalingrad, and the Russians have held their recent gains outside the city. On the steppes north-west of Stalingrad the Germans have "built up a strong defensive line between the Don and the Volga to protect their left flank. It is here that Marshal Timoshenko has been attacking recently, and he has cut an important highway. Moscow announces that German counter-attacks \ have been repelled and unofficial reports say that the Russian advance has been resumed. That the Germans realise the importance of the Russian relief drive north-west of Stalingrad is shown in messages today which state that the Germans are intensifying their efforts there and counter-attacking. Moscow claims that they are being held.

The German radio has broadcast io r listeners outside Germany that it is of no importance that Stalingrad should be taken quickly; they say that the fighting in the Caucasus is much mbre significant. The German radio has not yet made this announcement to its home listeners.

The Germans are making a big effort to get possession of one of the main streets running across the city of Stalingrad from the west down to the Volga, but they have nothing to show for their recent attacks in this sector.
