NORTHLAND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

An interesting and instructive address on medicinal and drug plants was given by Mr. D. Cairns, M.Sc., # of the Botany Division of the Scientific and Industrial Research Department, at the September meeting of the Northland. Horticultural Society. A brief history was given of the uses of plants as medicines and drugs, and pressed specimens were shown. Plants - mentioned were ma huang, autumn crocus, squill, rhubarb, wormweed, monkshood, opium poppy, castor bean, buchu, liauorice, fennel, caraway, coriander, pepperment, thornapple, deadly nightshade, henbane, and valerian. Native plants included koromiko and feather fern (hebes), snow gentian and pukatea. Special mention was made of koromiko, which formerly •. was used medicinally by Maoris, and has been for many years a valuable addition to the pharmacoepia.
