RUGBY LEAGUE

MANUKAU ROVERS WIN ■■■

Rugby League in Wellington had its most eventful day of the wartime seasons on Saturday, when, at the Basin Reserve, the Manukau Rovers (one of Auckland's best-performed teams) was in action against the local representatives. An added attraction about the visiting side was that it was composed of Maoris, and, following a haka, they made the rilay in the breezy way characteristic of them. However, there was some fairly strong opposition, and it was not until late in the game that the visitors' position was made secure. For a considerable part the scoring was even enough to keep the crowd keenly ■interested. Playing with the wind in the first spell, Wellington set the score going, but at halftime the position had been evened up; in fact, at several stages of the match the scores were level. Wellington later took the lead again, but finally the visitors ran out comfortable winners by 23 points to 17. The play had its attractive features, but with the exploiting of the open order there was much faulty handling. l I For Manukau Rovers Hemi scored two tries, converted three, and kicked a penalty goal, and Broderlck, Butler, and Te Tai each scored a try; for Wellington Matson .scored a try and kicked two penalty goals, and Penman and Courtenay each scored a try, Solomon converting two tries. Mr. G. Kelly refereed.
