RATIONALISATION
LIMITED TRADES
APPEAL BOARD HINT
"It may be necessary, if the position gets worse, for certain businesses to amalgamate," remarked Mr. F. Campbell, an Appeal Boai-d member, during an Armed Forces Appeal Board sitting in Wellington, when point was made of the extent to which staffs in a particular specialised line of employment were being depleted. "With the zoning of deliveries it may be necessary for certain industries to be zoned. That, of course, is not our business."
With regard to certain limited trades, the Crown representative (Mr. E. Rowden) said they were getting to the question whether there should not be some form of grouping of the men available. It seemed that they could be putting in more time on their particular work or in other directions of an essential nature.
"Is there any means whereby these resources could be pooled?" asked the chairman (Mr. E. P. Hay), who. pressing the matter further as other cases affecting the. same culling were heard, sought information as to the possibility of rationalising the work in that trade so that men who were working 40 hours per week could put in more time.
Doubts were expressed by some appellants that the rationalising or pooling could be worked effectively and efficiently, but it was suggested by some that it might be possible for some specialists to undertake more work of the kind than they were doing. To have the extra work brought in would be preferable to having the men go out to other concerns to do it.
