BALANCED OUTLOOK
GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S
ADVICE
The need for a balanced outlook at the present time was stressed by the Governor* General, Sir Cyril Newall, speaking last night at a ceremony held at the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association Club to mark the 29th anniversary of the association as a united organisation.
An occasion like this gathering, said his Excellency, joined all together in the spirit of unity and friendship. That was something they all wanted in these times of trouble. There was far too much moping and depression when things went wrong, or undue optimism when something went in their favour. It would be better to try and look at things evenly. When he first came to New Zealand he was told that the association was "a good show." Their report supported this. Since the outbreak of this warthey had collected and distributed £15,000 for charitable and patriotic purposes. That was a fine effort and should prove an incentive to an even better one.'
More men were going into the forces, and no matter how generous a government was, there were still many amenities to be provided by public endeavour. It was the duty and privilege of those who could not serve to assist in providing these amenities. The president, Mr. E. E. Brooking, expressed appreciation that his Excellency, who had so many calls on his time, should consent to visit the club on the anniversary of its foundation as a united association. They were proud, too, to honour his Excellency as one who had served the Empire with such distinction.-
His Excellency, who was accompanied by Captain G. Heathcote Helmore, A.D.C,, was given an enthusiastic reception and musical honours.
