DELIVERY OF BREAD
ZONING SCHEME
A bread delivery zoning scheme for Wellington city and suburbs, the Hutt Valley, Eastbourne, Wainui, Ngaio, and Johnsonville, to come into operation on September 21, has been approved by the Minister of Transport (Mr. Semple). The general effect of the scheme is that one baker will be allocated to each shop, and there will be no private deliveries of bread except to hospitals, hotels, and large consumers.
Committees have been set up under the scheme to consider complaints and generally to assist in its administration. The committee for the Wellington area will comprise two representatives of the Wellington City Council, one representative of the Wellington Bakers' Association, and Mr. H. M. Christie, the zoning officer for the North Island. The committee for the Hutt Valley and Eastbourne areas will consist of two members representative of the various local authorities, one member representatiye of the Hutt Valley Bakers' Association, one member representative of the Wellington Bakers' Association, and the zoning officer.
The public are asked to continue to obtain bread from the shop previously patronised, though they may not continue to get the same make of bread. Those who at present are on a delivery service are urged to put in their orders at the nearest shop.
The zoning scheme is part of the general action by the Government to meet the serious situation due to the shortage of rubber. Mr. Semple said last night that the scheme would result in a considerable saving of rubber and petrol, and also man-power.
