LEGION OF HONOUR

HERRIOT RESIGNS FROM

THE ORDER

(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 11. M. Herriot, President of the French Chamber of Deputies, has sent to the Chancellor of the Order of the Legion of Honour his resignation from the Order, in which he was knighted by M. Clemenceau during the last war.

A copy of his letter of resignation has reached General de Gaulle's headquarters. M. Herriot states that since the Cross of the Legion of Honour has been awarded posthumously to two French officers who were killed in Russia under the German Command, he would betray the memory of M. Clemenceau and his example of pure and ardent patriotism if he retained the decoration.—B.O.W.
