WITHDRAWALS BY DEFENDERS

' Tonight's . Moscow communique speaks of fighting during the day to' the west and south-west of Stalingrad, and in the Caucasus area, at Kovorossisk, and Mozdok. "The Germans are! making, a total effort, to break through the western defences of Stalingrad, and their great concentrations of tanks and infantry are being used regardless of loss. The Russians have had to withdraw from two populated places in this area. In the approaches to the city from the twest the Germans have lost some of their armour in the minefields which the Russians have laid down. In the area of Novorossisk, the communique reports bitter fighting today. In spite of heavy losses, the Germans have broken through into the northwest of the' town, but by a counterattack the Russian troops are holding the enemy. • '•'..The'Soviet Information Bureau has made.a special announcement that between May 1 and August 31 73 enemy divisions were routed by the Red ■Army.
