BLAZE AT SEA
LARGEST U.S. LINER DAMAGED

It is announced in Washington that America's largest liner, the 24-000-ton Manhattan, now the naval transport Wakefield. has been severely damaged in mid-Atlantic by fire.
The Wakefield had over 1000 passengers, including American women and children from Britain and Eire. She had a warship escort, and was abandoned, but later the captain and some members of the crew returned and put out the flames. The hulk was salvaged and towed to a United States port.
The origin of the fire has not been determined.
