GAOL FOR ASSAULT
. A fight on a ship in the early hours of this morning in which one man was hit on the head with a meat hook and another was stabbed with a fork resulted in the appearance in the Magistrate's Court yesterday of John Alexander Osborne, a negro stoker, aged 23, on a charge of assaulting D. D. Lawrence. He pleaded not guilty but was convicted and sentenced by Mr. 3. L. Stout, S.M., to one month's imprisonment with hard labour, with the condition that he is to be sent out of the country if possible T m the meantime. "He's regarded 3s a very dangerous man," said Senior-Sergeant T. Campagnola.
The evidence for the police was that Osborne, who was a native of Panama, had been placed on the ship to be taken out of the country. Early this morning he began an argument with other men, and in the course of it he was hit with a meat hook and he stabbed Lawrence in the back with a fork., Both men were taken to hospital but had since been discharged. ■ Osborne pleaded self-defence.
