THOUSAND BRAZILIAN TROOPS LOST

WASHINGTON, August 17
The Navy Department announced that all 39 members of the crew of a medium-sized American freighter were saved when the vessel was torpedoed in the Atlantic several hundred miles from the South American coast last month. The survivors spent six days in lifeboata, and were finally. picked up by a United Nations vessel, which brought them to a United States east coast port. £ _ ... „ The Buenos Aires newspaper "Critic" reports that the 4800-ton Brazilian freighter Baependy was torpedoed and sunk off the Brazilian coast. About 1000 Brazilian troops were lost.
