35-37 AGE GROUP

Men of 35, 36, and 3? years of age, with children, together with the inflow into classes drawn upon previously, are to be called up for service with the armed forces. Approximately 21,000 men will be affected, and their names will be gazetted on September 15. In announcing this last night the Minister of National Service (Mr. Broadfoot) said that the men would be medically examined as soon as possible, but at present no indication could be given of when they would be required to enter camp. ' /

"The withdrawal of further men from industry to enter, the forces," said the Minister, "will necessitate the application of measures of industrial reorganisation designed to offset these losses in so far as they affect the more essential industries, and further and more drastic curtailments of nonessential industries and services are inevitable. *

"Up to the end of July last, more than 5000 persons had been directed into essential industries, while more than 2000 essential workers who would ordinarily have left these industries were prevented from, doing so in terms of the national service emergency regulations. In order to ensure that these and related measures for rationalisation and reorganisation of industry and mobilisation of the Dominion's latent labour resources are carried but with the maximum effectiveness, the War Administration has plans in hand at the present time involving a complete examination of industries and services. This examination will be merely the prelude to . a further acceleration of measures designed to meet the/needs of the armed forces while at the. same time maintaining those industries and services which are essential to the community."
