SHELLS POURED IN

AERIAL VIEW OF RAID

(Rcc. 12.45 p.m.) RUGBY. Aug. 30". ■ The pilot and rear gunners of a leading R.AJF. bomber attacking Rhodes gave a description of an aerial view of the naval attack on the port. The gunner said the second pilot thought he detected lightning ahead as they were approaching the target, but it was discovered to be flashes of the British naval guns.

The bombardment was terrific, shells pouring in at the rate of one a second in continuous bursts. The pilot, who was a squadron leader from Wales, said: "I led the attack on Maritza aerodrome. Coming over the target it seemed that hell was let loose below.

"Our .ships, which were quite close to the island, had taken the enemy by surprise. The ground defences were poor and ragged. We dropped all our bombs on the aerodrome." —8.0. W.
