, Buoyed up by the news of the war in the Solomon Islands area, the stock markets closed the week generally cheerful, without, however, any commensurate buying ■ movement. Some fairly large transactions have helped, in this improvement. Gilt-edged New Zealand and Australian securities- were moderately active. Among the Government bonds, New Zealands still command a preference over those of Australia, partly owing to-the geographical position and partly because . the-sterling debt is not overburdened" by a mass of stock carrying Interest at 5 - per" cent. Consequently shortdated ■;New Zealand loans. yVill enjoy a reasonably free market, and it is. only in the case of the long-dated stocks bearing a- low rate of Interest that; minimum, prices produced a kind of "freezing" process.:
