WHEAT POOL PLAN

FAMINE ftEUEF AFTER WAR

WASHINGTON, August 1. The International Wheat Council is meeting on Monday to work out details connected with a relief reserve of 100,000,000 bushels of wheat for feeding famine-stricken nations after the war. The council is composed of four principal wheat-producing countries, the United States, Australia, Canada, and Argentina, also Britain, •the principal' wheat importer^-■•---. ••■-. The State Department declared it had been found impracticable to hold the proposed" international conference to discuss production controls, but the council had been convened because of the necessity for instituting temporary controls and establishing lriwiediately a pool of wheat for relief purposes. It was explained that there was no intention at present of earmarking any specific wheat for this purpose. Each Government contributing to the pool may use its own means of acquiring wheat. The council will discuss the size of the contribution from Australia and Argentina and also the question of paying transportation costs.

The United States has already agreed to furnish 50.000,000 bushels and Canada and Britain 25,000,000 bushels each.

The council, it is understood, plans to establish a permanent secretariat here to assist in obtaining the compliance of all the nations participating.
