CORRESPONDENCE

WOMEN TRAM CONDUCTORS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—References in the Press to the wages being paid to women tram conductors, including a paragraph in "The Post" and mention at the Hospital Board meeting, make it appear that there are some grounds for belief that these statements are liable to create a false impression.

There is, no doubt whatever that our women conductors, in common with the rest of the tramways service, are giving a very valuable service to the community, and we are concerned indeed that they should be kept in the spotlight because of the fact that when doing a most onerous job under most arduous conditions in replacement Of male workers they are receiving male rates of pay. There is no doubt whatever that they earn every penny they are paid, and in fairness to these girls we would- ask that you make it clear that they are. required for exactly the sam6%wbrk as the men,- including rushhour conducting, that the pay is for a six-day week of shift work, and that special rates for Sunday work are received only- occasionally and then may involve the loss of much-needed rest.—l am, etc.. ■■•

P. A. HANSEN, ■ Secretary, Wellington Tramway Employees' Union
