RUSSIANS PLEASED
SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE
AT VORONEZH
I (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 19. ! The Russians are almost exuberant about the swing over from defence to attack around Voronezh. Moscow radio says that in bloody battles the initiative is passing into Soviet hands. ; "We are winning back territory yard jby yard and house by house,", it says. "The strength of our counter-blows is increasing, but the enemy is still resisting bitterly and the battle grows ever fiercer." The latest reports show no improvements elsewhere. The Vichy news agency says that the Germans, advancing from Voroshilovgrad,' occupied Gondorovak, 13 miles west of the Kamensko. Other reports emphasise the increased German threat towards Taganrog and record greater German activity in the Orel and Bryansk areas. The Russians, however, captured a large German stronghold on the Akeilman front.
