GUNS AT NEWCASTLE

The coastal batteries at Newcastle opened fire at an object off the coast last night. Searchlights swept the sea and the guns kept up a barrage, The defence authorities say the firing was at a suspected submarine.

The shooting, which , was not returned, was preceded by a black-out in the Newcastle area and a stand-by warning to National Emergency Service wardens. Sirens were not sounded, but hundreds of people went to the shelters and remained in them till the firing ceased.

Observers state that the searchlights appeared, to be following an object through the water, but that they could see nothing resembling a submarine.
