RETURNED TO OWNERS

AUSTRALIAN SMALL BOATS

(Rec. 9 a.m.)

SYDNEY,. June: It

Owners of small boats and Of river craft welcomed the official: announcement today by the Army Minister, Mr. F. M. Forde, that the Government had agreed t6 allow , all types •of small boats, hitherto immobilised in New South Wales, to be returned to their owners. ~ '".'..

Mr.' FOrde emphasised that if the war position necessitated such action, smalL craft would be immobilised again with a view to their destruction before they could fall into'the enemy's hands. The loss of. the boats,, particularly at pleasure . and seaside resorts, led to considerable heartburning and would probably have meant ruination to persons whose livelihoods depended on hiring pleasure craft on rivers and estuaries. . . .. •. . . \ ,

Ever since the Government commandeered thousands of boats in the early, part of the, year, the supplies of fish on the. metropolitan markets have fallen away heavily.
