EMPLOYERS' APPEALS

FOR MARRIED MEN

SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION

Appeals on behalf of married men against Territorial- service promise to give the appeal authorities full-time jobs for some considerable time ahead. Complete returns show that of the 2187 married men in the Wellington district called in the last ballot, 1344. or more than 61 per cent., are the subject of appeals.

This is the largest proportion of appeals yet .arising from any ballot, and a significant feature is that 80 per cent, of them are made by employers or behalf of their employees. This appears to reflect the concern of employers at 'the encroachment that military demands are making on civil man-power resources, which in many instances are now reduced to the bare workable minimum.

Appeals against service in the Home Guard in Wellington represent so far only a small proportion of the 2600 men that have now been called up, the total today being 170.
