The basis of import licensing for the seventh period would lie announced shortly, said the Acting Minister of Customs (Mi;. Nordmey^er) today. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining supplies from overseas^ ' due partly to the shortage of raw materials and partly to shipping hazards, importer's should have as much ! notice as possible concerning allocatiolns in order to take the earliest opportunity of placing orders, he said. j There would be an increase in some cases and a decrease in others.' Possibly an increasing number of; items would be under control. There was no point in granting licences fok- commodities known to be unprocurable.
"The general policy," said thie Minister, "will be to import goods essential for the Dominion's economic wellbeing to an extent consistent with the maintenance of overseas fundb at a level which will enable us to jiittance our loan obligations, war commitments, and our post-war programme." {
