CHARGED WITH THEFT

A UNION DELEGATE

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 10. Pleading guilty to three charges of theft of money totalling £88, Gerald Frank Gilbert Smith (56), labourer, employed at the Southdown freezing works, was placed on probation for two years and ordered to make full restitution at the rate of 10s a week and to take out a prohibition crder.

The police said that Smith was a delegate to the Freezing Workers' Union. He was issued with books of membership tickets valued at £1 each and was entitled to receive 10 per cent, of the money accounted for. Investigation showed that for Uvo years he had systematically practised dishonesty. He told the police that some of the money was spent on his family and some on liquor.

Defending counsel said that Smith was separated from his wife and had considerable demands on his earnings. His fellow-workers had collected £25 towards restitution.
