INCIDENT RECALLED
EARLY TRIPLE DEAD HEAT
! (By "Binocular.") Following upon the triple dead heat at Marton, "the Southland scribe, "Sir Modred," recalls an occasion of more than forty years ago when a triple dead heat was declared at Orepuki. The bookmakers were then operating, and when the judge, Mr. T. Timpany, announced his decision it caused excitement in. the ring among the fielders, who at first refused to pay out. Eventually, the voice of the leader of the ring was heard: "I'll pay the winners." The other bookmakers quickly followed suit, for they realised that a hot favourite, had been beaten and that a division, of the money to be paid out on the triple winners was all in favour of the layers of the odds. It also recalls a story of an occasion when a bay, a grey, and a black horse crossed the line in close order, and the judge (after a heavy lunch) gave a verdict in favour of the piebald. Race patrons demand a higher standard today. Same Family.- —Alienate, winner of the hurdle race at the Napier Park Meeting, and Support, winner of the Marewa Hack Handicap, are both products of the Gainscourt mare Alimony, who after failing in three outings as a two-year-old was not raced further. It was Alienates first start over the battens. By Kincardine. —Kinconda, winner of the maiden event at Napier Park, is a three-year-old filly by Kincardine from Golconda, an imported mare by Bonarosa. Few of the older members of the family went far, and this was Kinconda's seventh outing. Pleasing.— Judged on his effort at Napier Park, Burra Sahib has benefited by the operation he underwent. He should carry his account much further. It was rather surprising to find his stablemate Yogi capable of footing it with the sprinters, and as a result of Mr. F. Ormond's pair running first and third their place-divi-dend was a very pleasing one. Coming Bight. —When she won at her first start this term a bright future was predicted for the Tiderace filly Crucible, but it was-not till ten starts later that she again scored, in the highweight event at Waverley, 7 furlongs. A doubt may y have been entertained whether she would appreciate a Umile journey, but she scored over the distance at Napier Park at her next outing. Bred as she is, this filly should go much further. Strong Support.— There was good money for Iritekura in the maiden event at Napier Park, but this four-year-old daughter of Kincardine and the Commandant mare Kura was beaten out of a place. Kura is a halfsister to Raana, who might have gone far as a jumper had he kept sound. Injured.— Mr. J. F. Cotton, of Petone. who has been looking after Little Robin during his compulsory spell, underwent an experience last week that he will not wish to repeat. Proceeding to feed the horse he was attacked by two dogs. His injuries, together with the shock.he experienced, was sufficient to place him in hospital.
