SAVING TYRES
SECOND LINE OF
DEFENCE
(0.C.) , AUCKLAND. This Day. The urgent need for the people of New Zealand.to realise the dire position faced by the rubber and tyre .industries and consequently by "the whole country, was emphasised by the Minister of Transport and Marine, (Mr. Semple), when addressing members of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday. . ' "The United States has agreed that no tyres are to be sold to retail buyersfor three years," Mr. Semple said. "We have to carry on with the supplies at present in this country. If"*we goon without zoning, a considerable number of commercial vehicles will be off the road in - a few -months. It is hard' to make the people realise this. "The Army is not badly off- for supplies at • present," he continued*' "but the second line of defence,.that of supply, is in danger." This second line, Mr. Semple said, must be kept intact, and if we did the right K thing we could carry on, but otherwise commercial trade would soon be chaos.
