FURNITURE TRADES DISPUTE
Two matters only were unsettled in the New Zealand furniture trades dispute which came before the Court of Arbitration today. They were deduction of wages and meal allowance. Mr. W Ferguson was advocate for the union and Mr. J. B. Hanlon for! the employers. The workers claimed the present award in the matter of deduction of wages, but the employers asked that there be a deduction from weekly wages when factories were temporarily closed for repair or cleaning of machinery. For the workers it was contended. that there was no need for deductions as the work could be done during the annual holidays. The workers sought an increase in meal money from Is 6d to Is 9d to offset the increased prices of foodstufiEs. Decision was reserved.
