NAZIS ATTACK IN NORTH
BIG DRIVE BEGUN?
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 9. The Germans have started largescale attacks between Leningrad and the Valdai Hills,, says, a Moscow message. The Red Army is resisting- firmly and counterattacking-. The wide area over which the attacks are being made suggests that this may be part of the major German offensive. The Exchange Telegraph agency's Moscow correspondent agrees that the Germans have not gained an inch of ground in the five-day offensive against Sebastopol. ','Red Star" reports that the first two days of the offensive consisted of attacks by small German units in an effort to find the Russian weak spots. The Germans launched a big attack on the third day. • Enormous losses did not prevent the Germans from bringing up reinforcements for fresh onslaughts. Berlin claims the fall of Sebastopol is "only a matter of time. Messages from Sweden say the Germans hope to batter into the fortress by sheer weight of bombs, iising the advantage of the possession of additional aerodromes to mass planes on the required scale. The latest dispatches from Berlin state that the Sebastopol attack is a secondary operation designed to cover preparations for a much bigger^ drive soon to be launched in another sebtor of the front. The German High Command reports heavy fighting on the Volkhov front, where the Russians, after strong artillery preparations, attacked with infantry and tanks.
