OVER THE CHANNEL

FIGHTER OFFENSIVE

LONDON, June 8. R.A.F. fighters roared over the Channel this evening in the direction of France, but as yet there are no indications of their targets. Earlier today our planes carried out offensive sweeps over a front of 120 miles from Bruges to Dieppe. Four enemy planes were destroyed and six of ours are missing. A strong force of fighters escorted Boston bombers to Bruges where they bombed a dock, a railway, and a factory. All returned safely.

Spitfires carried out sweeps between Dieppe and Dunkirk to a depth of 30 or 40 miles. At St. Omer, two American pilots accounted for three enemy planes. R.A.F. fighters were out last night over occupied territory carrying out routine raids.

Last month, the Fighter Command destroyed 52 enemy aircraft en the other side of the Channel —42 in daylight and 10 at night. Another 13 were shot down in daylight around the British coast.
