OBITUARY

PROFESSOR GILBERT MURRAY

LONDON, June .7. The death has occurred of Professor Gilbert Murray.

Born in Sydney in 1866, Professor Murray was the third son of the late Sir Terence Murray, President of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Leaving Australia at tlie age of 11 years, he was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, London, and St. John's College, Oxford. He at once established himself as the most brilliant classical scholar of his day, win-

ning the Hertford, Ireland, and Craven Scholarships. In 1888 he was elected a Fellow of New College, Oxford, and in the next year became Professor of Greek at Glasgow University, holding that post for 10 years. In 1907 he was appointed Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford. After the Great War his chief efforts were directed to the practical work of establishing the League of Nations, and he represented South Africa at the League Assembly. As chairman of the League of Nations Union from 1923 to 1938, and president of the International Committee of Intellectual Co-operation since 1928, he did much in Britain in the cause of peace. In the New Year honours' List last year Professor Murray was awarded the Order of Merit.
