TWO PIANOS ACCEPTED
RESPONSE TO A.N.A. APPEAL
SERVICE CLUBS KEPT BUSY
Those who have lent old pianos to the Army, Navy, and Air Force Club would be more than repaid foi1 their generosity if they were to see the pleasure that they are giving the men. The community singing led by Mr. H. F. Wood has become a tremendously j popular .interlude and it is one of these recently-acquired pianos that is used for the accompaniments. The club had a wonderful response to its appeal for pianos and the two that were accepted for the duration of the war wex*e lent by the. Wellington branch of the R.S.A. and Mr, E. Foster, Kenya Street, Ngaio. It is surprising the number of musicians that are always to be found among the visitors, and at the dance on Friday night during the supper interval servicemen formed a full ternational dance band" and gave an impromptu performance that would have done credit to a professional orchestra. Throughout the weekend and also during' the, previous week the club was crowded. Members of the W.W.S.A. Nursing Division were on duty on Saturday and members of the English-speaking Union were, in charge on Wednesday. Provision supplied by country , friends included hampers from the Martinborough Mayoress's committee, cooked ham frpm T. H. Walker (Hawera), sheep from Mr. A. H: Smith (Hastings), and N. H. Marshall (Fein Flats, Marton), and vegetables from ' the Hawera W.W.S.A., the Martori A.W.A. helpers, and the Patea Women's Home Guard. A donation was also received from the Wanganui Air Force Relations. HUTT VALLEY HOSPITALITY. Many servicemen this weekend enjoyed the hospitality of the Hutt Valley Services Club, recently opened by the Mayor, Major Andrews. The rooms had been charmingly decorated and a large fire gave a warm welcome to the visitors. The hostesses were the members of the women's committee. The club wishes to thank Mr. Horn for a gift of milk, Mr. Heggie (firewood), Mrs. Bosher (savouries), and Mr. Munday (meat). WELL-KNOWN PERFORMERS. Mrs. Wilfrid Andrews, Mrs. Millward, Mrs. Look, Miss Nola Hyde, and Mr. W. Marshall were among those who contributed to the concert programme presented at " the V.M.C.A. after the soldiers' tea last night. Their accompanists were Mrs. Herrick, Miss Finlay, and Mr. Wood. The leader of the community singing was Mr. H. Hindle. There was, as usual, a* large crowd of visitors, and their hostesses were the president, Mrs. Gilmour, and members of the Wellington East branch of the League of Mothers. Mr. R. H. Hampers were received from the central council of the Children of Mary sodalities, and apples from Mr. G. Murray. Bombardier' G. Nelson entertained with several songs on Friday, and dancing and table tennis occupied the time of the large number of men present during the weekend. A VISITING PADRE. Record crowds of men in • uniform heard Chaplain R. Barnes, a visiting padre, take the Sunday service at the Y.F.H. Club and also saw moving pictures in colour, which he himself had taken, of beauty, spots overseas. At the dance on Saturday night Mrs. W. Tailby and Miss W. Valentine were hostesses.
