PACIFIC ACTIVITY
Satisfaction was expressed by the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) this afternoon with the successes achieved against the Japanese by American forces in the Midway Island area and also by units of General MacArthur's^ South-West Pacific Command off the coast of Australia. .Mir. Fraser said that the news of the past few days giving accounts of destruction and damage to Japanese naval units in the Pacific, was both heartening and encouraging. He added that it should act as a spur to everyone to do his or her best in" furthering the war effort of the Dominion. "The reported shelling of Sydney and Newcastle was apparently on a small scale," said Mr. Fraser, "and is the sort of thing that can be expected throughout the Pacific area."
Gulf of Mexico, has expressed the opinion that there is reason to be encouraged by the navy's campaign against submarines. "The only way to conquer the submarine menace," he said, "is to sink submarines. I have instructed all our forces that the sinking of submarines is their primary mission."
