ENEMY'S DUAL PLAN
TO DIVIDE DEFENCE AND CUT ROAD
LONDON, April 29. ' With Lashio in flames last night, and the Japanese ground forces 69 to 70 miles distant, the battle for the Burma Road has reached a . critical stage. The military correspondent of the "Daily Express" says: "It is plain that the enemy is driving to Lashio before tackling Mandalay. Their plan is not only to neutralise the Burma Road but also to divide the British and Chinese forces, probably assuming that General Alexander's small army would be more easily dealt with later. "If the Japanese reach Lashio and subsequently force the British north of Mandalay they will have achieved one of their major strategical objectives—the temporary isolation of China from the outside world. - The Japanese incidentally would secure a good striking position for an attack against >adia."
