RECALL OF A.I.F.
INITIATIVE FROM MR.
CHURCHILL
LONDON, April 23.
Mr. F. M. Forde, the Australian Army Minister, replied today to people who had criticised Great Britain for not doing more for the Commonwealth. It was Mr. Churchill, he said, who had suggested that some portion of the A.I.F. should be recalled to Australia, and Mr. Forde said the recalling would have been impossible but for the might of the British Navy.
Sir Ronald Cross, British High Commissioner in Australia, speaking today in Melbourne, pointed out that shipping was the key to the sending of reinforcements to Australia. They had to be withdrawn from the nearest theatre of supply, which was America.
Help from Britain must necessarily be directed to other theatres of war.
