LIQUOR LAWS

STRICTER ENFORCEMENT

WANTED

"This may not be a matter for us, but I think you will all agree that there is more inefficiency caused by the abuse of alcohol than anything else, and that refers particularly to the military side of life," said the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, when discussing at a meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council last evening the question of giving support to a motion passed by the New Zealand Inter-church Council asking the Government for the strict enforcement of the licensing laws, particularly in regard to the hours of sale; a reduction of alcoholic content; and a reduction in the amount of liquor manufactured.

Mr. Andrews said the principal breach of the law was in sly grog selling and he did think that in this regard the hotels were the chief offenders.

Councillor F. Campbell said he did not think it was a matter for the council.

Councillor G. L. Gieson disagreed with this view and considered the evil sufficiently great for any responsible body to do what it could to mitigate the trouble.

The Mayor ruled that the matter was not really one for the council, and the letter was received.

The Lower Hutt City Council last evening approved a request made by the military authorities for the supply from the municipal library of between 400 and 500 books for use in military libraries.
