SIX MONTHS' GAOL

A nightwatchman, Thomas Ridout, pleaded guilty in the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court yesterday to a charge of stealing 1000 feet of timber, four to five hundredweight of nails, and carpenters' tools from a property under his care at ■ Silverstream.

Counsel for the accused said that workmen had evidently been very careless with their tools, leaving them .ibout the building at night, and thus putting temptation into Ridout's way. The Magistrate, Mr A. M. Goulding, said that the carpenters must have 'hought their tools safe because of the presence of the nightwatchman. The ■••rime, he said, was a betrayal of trust.

The accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour.
