NEW COMMANDER
ARMY APPOINTMENTS
A new commander for the land forces in Fiji is announced,-Briga-dier O. H. Mead, C.8.E., D.5.0., having been given this post to relieve Major-General W. li. Cunningham, C.8.E., D.5.0., V.D., who has had a long period of service in Fiji and returns to New Zealand on leave. Brigadier Mead, who is promoted to the temporary rank of Major-General, relinquishes the appointment of Officer Command-
ing Southern Military District,
The Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) said last. night that because MajorGeneral Cunningham had had a long period of service in a tropical climate it was considered unwise to run the
risk of his health deteriorating by keeping him there for a furthei period. Fiji had been strongly reinforced and the consequent reorganisation had been completed. General Cunningham had had a heavy task in organising the forces and defences in Fiji, and had done excellent work, entitling him to a well-deserved rest. OTHER CHANGES. Other important Army promotions and appointments were also announced by the Minister as follows:— Colonel N. A. Row. D.5.0., relinquishes command of an infantry brigade in New Zealand and is appointed to command a brigade in Fiji
