"A FOOL'S PARADISE"
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Mr. Churchill's warning, the blunt and brutal hard facts facing us in this war and the knowledge that the Japanese have already twice knocked at our front door, Darwin, leaves one stone cold. Yet we in New Zealand are still going along in our usual complacent way, seemingly quite oblivious to the fact that this war cannot be won by anything other than very hard work, and certainly less still on 40 hours a week. The time is long past for us to be still fighting or working with the gloves on—instead, we all should be into it with fists bare and sleeves rolled up.
Here is a golden opportunity for our Government or the Opposition, or the N.Z.R.S.A. for that matter, to do something to rectify this deplorable state of affairs, and might I say to the latter that this is not a political question, but is one that vitally concerns everybody, no matter what their political views—it is a matter of great national importance. Surely there is an organisation or someone big and strong enough to put an end to our living in this "fool's paradise."—l am, etc.,
