N.B.S. CONCERT PARTY

POPULARITY WITH SOLDIERS

When the National Broadcasting Service's concert party visited a big military camp recently under the auspices .of the Official Camp Entertainers, the show was. received with considerable enthusiasm. There- was '"standing room only" in the hall where the concert was presented and vigorous pplause demanded encores for almost every item.

The producer, Mr. B. Beeby, and the organiser, Mr. M. A. Rickard, both took part in the programme, playing in a number of entertaining sketches. Other popular numbers included items by Mr. Claude Jupp ("the wizard of the mouth-organ"), the Swingtime Harmonists, and the Wright sisters.

Yeoman service was given by Mr. Henry Rudolph's orchestra. A running commentary on the programme was broadcast by Mr. Clive Drummond. Other members of the party included Misses Sylvia Denenie, Eileen and Kathleen Attlee, Rae Sanders, Gwenyth Greeenwood, Win Kindred, Yvonne Andrews, Doreen Calvert, Lauri Jones, Doreen Atkinson, Mrs. M. Gamble, Mrs. Aspey, and Messrs. C. Jupp, F. Andrews, W. McCarthy, H. Painter, D. Layin, J. Brand, N. HullBrown, S. Crisp, and J. Parkin.

Later Captain Ramsden thanked the party on behalf of the large audience,' and paid tribute to Mrs. DennistounWood (hon. organiser of the Camp Entertainers) and Mrs. G. Webb (hon. secretary) on the high standard of the programmes they selected. Afterwards Major Gray and officers of No. 2 Mess entertained the party to supper.

FARMERS' UNION MEMBERS

The Lower Hutt branch of the W.D.F.U. launched its 1942 activities with a garden afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Smith, "Paarina," Waterloo Road. Among those present were Mrs. C. K. Wilson and Mrs. W. Orr (Dominion vice-presidents), Mrs. O. Brown (president of the Wellington provincial executive), Mrs. P. C. Jordan (president Wellington branch), and the guest speaker, Miss Marion Cocks-Johnstone (tutor to the Women's Institutes and W.D.F.U.). Mrs. Orr hails from Balfour, Southland, and Mrs. Wilson from Pio Pio, King Country. The branch president, Mrs. A. C.

Stevenson, welcomed the visitors. Mrs. Orr gave an encouraging message, stressing the fact that women must carry on at all costs during these hazardous times, and Miss CocksJohnstone gave a talk on wartime vegetable growing, with a practical demonstration in the vegetable garden.

A bring and buy stall did good business under the care of, Mrs. S. J. Goulter.

Proceeds from this function will be devoted to division and patriotic work.
