WELLINGTON BRIDE
MARRIAGE OF MERCANTILE OFFICER
An officer of the mercantile marine who has had an adventurous career since the outbreak of war was married on Tuesday night to a Wellington girl at St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell, Auckland. The bridegroom was Chief Radio Officer Eric Raymond Saunders and the bride Miss Jean Kerr, of Wellington.
Exactly a year ago yesterday Mr. Saunders was out in the Atlantic Ocean when the ship he was in was torpedoed. With others he spent about 12 hours in a lifeboat and was picked up by a Greek steamer, aboard which the rescued parjty remained for about two weeks before being transferred to a Spanish ship which took them to
Lisbon and down to Gibraltar. Previously, Mr. Saunders had been in another ship which struck a mine, but he was unhurt. A number of his fellow-officers attended the wedding, the best man being Chief Officer J. W. C. Pring. Two of the other officers had been With Mr. Saunders in the torpedoed .ship. '■-.■•
A reception after the wedding was held at the home of Mrs. HF. Connelly, Takutai Street, Parnell.
