SEVERE STORM
OAMARU BATTERED
•DAMAGE BY HAIL
(P.A.) OAMARU, This Day. Damage which in the aggregate must amount to many hundreds of pounds was caused in Oamaru yesterday afternoon by the most severe hailstorm experienced in North Otago for more than 40 years.
Following a vivid display of lightning, accompanied by almost continuous peals of thunder, an incredibly heavy fall of hail battered orchards and gardens, smashed windows and skylights in all parts of the • town, ♦blocked gutters on the roofs of buildtings, and caused serious flooding in business premises and private dwellings. , Some hailstones were as big as pigeon's eggs. Public institutions suffered severely. At the Oamaru Public Hospital 70 panes of glass will require to be repaired, 60 at the Waitaki Boys' High School, and 30 at the Girls' High School.
Interior flooding was general throughout the town and particularly serious in business premises, where stocks were damaged by water.
Although some damage is reported from outlying districts, the storm appears to have centred on Oamaru.
