WOMEN VICTIMS
BOMBED DUTCH HOSPITAL SHIP
(Rec. 9 a.m.) BATAVIA, Feb. 25,
A nurse was killed and a woman chemist seriously injured on board the Dutch hospital ship Op Ten Toort, which was bombed by the Japanese.
Thirteen persons were officially listed as injured, but many more were cut by flying glass or received shock from the bomb blasts.
The operating theatre was wrecked and much equipment destroyed. The ship was on her trial run, and met bombers returning from raiding Surabaya.
The captain swung the helm hard over when he saw the attackers diving and the bombs just missed.
The Dutch state that Japan is not only a party to the Geneva Red Cross Convention, but has entered into an agreement with the Dutch Government whereby both countries undertake to respect each other's hospital ships.
